BBC series highlights life- saving work

A BBC series highlights life- saving work that consultant plastic surgeon Professor Malata has performed on one of his patients. The surgery saw Professor Malata and his colleague Mr Aman Coonar work together at Royal Papworth to take a flap of muscle and skin from a patient’s back and use it to fill the cavity and plug the hole in his chest caused by removing cancer from his lungs. The procedure took 18 hours, finishing at 4am in the morning. The entire operation was captured by cameras for a BBC series, Surgeons: At the Edge of Life, which began airing in September 2020 on BBC 2.

We are delighted that Professor Malata has been recognised for his achievements. Professor Malata has worked at Fitzwilliam Hospital for over 21 years and is the cosmetic surgery representative for the Medical Advisory Committee.
