Fitzwilliam recruit first onsite pharmacist
Tuesday 12 September 2017
The prescribing of medication is the most common healthcare intervention for a patient. So, having an onsite Hospital Pharmacist allows Fitzwilliam Hospital to offer medication expertise to patients that ensures a smooth service and discharge.
The post of our first on-site Pharmacist meets the pharmacological needs of our patients, improves patient safety and satisfaction, provides an efficient service for the provision of medications, and allows patients to be discharged as early as possible
We’re delighted that Patrick Downie has joined Fitzwilliam Hospital as our first on-site Pharmacist.Patrick came to us with a wealth of pharmacy experience from both hospital and community settings.
Patricks role invloves visiting the ward to check the list of patients on the ward to check how the patient’s pain is, how they slept and the medications they have brought into hospital. He will discuss with patients their pain relief and medications for home. These discussions aim to keep patients better informed so that they understand what their drug regime is and why. This leads to an improved outcome upon discharge.
He says: “I was excited to secure this new role at Fitzwilliam Hospital. It has allowed me to introduce new policies, train staff, develop the pharmacology service delivered to our patients, and expedite discharge times. We now operate in a way as if we have an onsite Pharmacy, something that may become reality in the future. It’s been a great challenge and continues to be so.”
