A warm welcome Mr Joe Walls, consultant plastic and reconstructive surgeon, to Fitzwilliam Hospital. Mr Walls has broad and extensive experience in cosmetic surgery, offering patients a full range of cosmetic treatments including breast surgery, facial surgery, body contouring and, skin mark removal and cancer treatment.
Mr Walls is particularly excited by one of the latest trends in cosmetic surgery, called fat transfer, fat graft or lipomodelling, where fat is moved from one part of your body to another.
Fat transfer involves harvesting fat from an area of your body with unwanted excess fat such as the abdomen, love handles and thighs to make them smaller and, transferring it to other areas of your body that may have flattened or lost volume including breasts, buttocks and the face. It aims to rejuvenate and enhance your body.
Mr Walls said: “Fat transfer offers several major benefits to patients. It is the ultimate in green surgery as it recycles a patient’s own cells and simply moves them from one area to another.
“Loss of fat in the skin is a major contributor of aging in the face, breast, buttocks and hands. Fat transfer can be used in these areas to improve their appearance and provide a more youthful look.”
Patients may request fat transfer for facial rejuvenation including cheek, lip and chin enhancement, breast reconstruction or enlargement, enhancement of buttocks, hips, thighs, calves and ankles and rejuvenation of the back of the hands.
“As these cells come from a patient’s own body there is no chance of rejection or allergic reaction to the material as there can be with other substances. Patient’s may choose fat transfer instead of implants for a more natural look in breast surgery,” he continued.
“Fat transfer also offers permanent enhancement. Once the fat has been transferred, it will remain in place effectively forever.”
As skin cancer lead for the region Mr Walls sees many patients with sun exposure and premature ageing.
“Interestingly, the injection of fat improves the quality of skin in that area and can reduce scarring or radiotherapy damage,” Mr Walls advises.
Mr Walls will see his patients several times before their cosmetic surgery to discuss and manage expectations in relation to the expected results and its implications, the procedure, after care and recovery and, to answer any questions his patients may have.
Fat transfer is a day case procedure that usually lasts a couple of hours. It involves removing the fat by liposuction, spinning the fat to separate it from any blood and other fluids and, then injecting the fat into the relevant area of your body.
