Mr Gibbons qualified in Dentistry from Guy's Hospital, London and passed his final fellowship in dental surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh, being awarded the Dean's Medal.  He completed his medical training at St John's College, Cambridge with a distinction in surgery and passed his FRCS at the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh in 1998 and his intercollegiate exit FRCS examination in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in May 2003.  In 2006 he was awarded the Lady Cade Medal for academic work and contributions to military surgery.
