What is Liposuction?

Liposuction surgery, also known as fat removal surgery or liposculpture, is the permanent removal of stubborn fatty deposits that are difficult to shift despite a regular exercise and healthy eating regime.

Liposuction removes fat from specific areas of your body by sucking it out through a tube. It is most often performed on your buttocks, hips, thighs and stomach to give better shape and definition to these problem areas.

It is not a weight loss tool and is best performed on people who are a normal weight and in areas where the skin is tight.

What does liposuction surgery involve?

Liposuction is typically carried out as a day case procedure under local or general anaesthetic and takes between one and two hours depending on the amount of fat you are having removed and the area being treated.

Your surgeon will make a small incision in the area being treated and insert a thin plastic tube called a cannula. The cannula is used to loosen the fat. The other end of this cannula is attached to a powerful high-pressure vacuum and fat deposits are removed quickly and efficiently from beneath your skin.

Some surgeons inject solutions into the area being treated, known as a wet technique. Others use dry liposuction.

You may have multiple areas treated at the same time.

Your incision will finally be stitched using dissolvable sutures and bandaged.

What are the benefits of liposuction?

  • Permanent body fat loss so even if you increase your body fat then it will not return to the treated areas.

  • A wider choice of clothes.
  • Removing a certain type of benign fatty tumour known as lipomas.
  • Treating gynecomastia, an embarrassing condition in which men develop fatty breast tissue.
  • Reducing excessive sweating and chafing by targeting sweat glands, and reducing the body’s ability to produce sweat in these areas.
  • Treating Lipodystrophy syndrome, where fat accumulates in one part of your body, to create a more natural looking body fat distribution.

Liposuction Cost

The cost of your liposuction will depend on the amount of fat being removed and the treatment area. Following your consultation you will be advised of the guide package price which includes any outpatient care for 60 days post discharge plus one follow up consultation.

Liposuction recovery and aftercare

You will go home the same day or stay overnight in hospital depending on the amount of fat being removed.

You will have tight bandages or compression garments placed on the treated area to reduce swelling and help the body adapt to its new shape. You will be advised how long you should wear this.

It’s also likely you will have considerable bruising that will gradually fade.

The amount of time off work will depend on the extent of your liposuction. If you only had a small amount of fat removed, you should be able to return to work within a few days but more substantial liposuction may require up to two weeks off work.

You can gently return to normal exercise after three to four weeks but you should avoid strenuous activity for ten to 12 weeks.

You should not drive until you feel comfortable wearing a seatbelt.
